Speaking and Listening
Our vision for Speaking and Listening at William Lilley:
Communication and language underpin all other areas of development, particularly Reading and Writing. Our strong emphasis on developing confident and articulate communication skills are apparent through all class sessions.
Our communication curriculum driver ensures that this is embedded within our curriculum.
Implementation:
All staff plan strategies for effective communication across all aspects of the curriculum. Here are a range of strategies which are implemented across the school.
- Children are taught how to speak in a range of different situations - from whole class to skills to aid conversation
- Communication friendly spaces are evident in the indoor and outdoor environment, supporting high quality communication and discussion
- Pupils who have English as an Additional Lanugage (EAL) are supported through careful assessment and identification of next steps
- Children participate in presentations and shows to parents to practice their public speaking
- New vocabulary is taught through high quality topic texts, from nursery to year two
- In Nursery, vocabulary is enhanced through interactions with adults and childre. There is also a focus on a word of the week
- New words relating to the topic are highlighted and referred to throughout learning
- When children join the school in EYFS, their language aquisition is assessed
- When pupils need further support, referrals are made to speech and language therapy and actions are supported in school
- Whole school strategies to support pupils to catch up and include interventions such as talking to learn and talking tables
- Communication is supported through visual cues and PECs for non-verbal learners
- All Interactions in EYFS focus upon communication and language skills
- Positive speaking and listening skills are taught and modelled
- Attention and listening skills underpin all learning behaviours

All staff share and actively promote a love of reading with the children, sharing quality texts for learning and enjoyment, in appropriate ‘reading friendly’ environments.
Implementation:
Reading and phonics underpins all that we do at William Lilley. We love reading and have a wide range of strategies and support systems in place to support pupils to become confident, eager and enthusiastic lifelong readers. These strategies include:
- Read Write Inc daily reading session
- Clear programme of phonics through Read, Write Inc which is rapidly delivered and closely tracked
- 1:1 phonics interventions
- Children share Read Write Inc Phonics book at home
- Links to phonics letters for parents
- Bespoke home learning opportunities and weekly reading and phonics activities
- Phonics open morning to inform and engage parents

- Quality, progressive reading areas in each class
- World book day celebrated
- Regular in-school book fairs
- Bespoke home learning opportunities and weekly reading and phonics activities
- Weekly reading activities for children and parents through homework and reading challenges
- Weekly visit from our reading dog 'Maggie'

Writing
Our vision for Writing at William Lilley:
Our children become confident and independent writers who are able to write for different purposes. We inspire children through sharing a range of high quality texts. Pupils learn to apply their phonic knowledge, use adventurous vocabulary and edit their work to form creative, interesting, varied and relevant texts pieces of writing.
Implementation:
- Daily Phonics through Read, Write Inc – relevant to child’s individual age and phase of development
- 1:1 Intervention phonic sessions
- Cross-curricular writing activities
- Speaking and listening activities including talk for writing and homework tasks
- Reading and writing challenges
- Writing for ‘real life’ purposes including visitors, visits, experiences
- Indoor and outdoor specific child initiated writing areas (EYFS)
- Handwriting teaching and pen licence
- Big write sessions (KS1)
- SPaG whole class teaching
- Consistent writing aids including: Phonics , tricky word mats, SPaG mats
- Consistent environmental support – working wall, phonics walls
- Self and teacher assessment through quality marking symbols
- Weekly independent writing activities
- Emphasis on physical gross and fine motor skills and progression within this
- Topics focused around high quality text
- Red editing pen to review, reflect and improve
- Vocabulary development and introduction to new high order vocabulary
